HISTORY
The 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo was a groundbreaking sports sedan and Europe’s first mass-produced turbocharged road car. Based on BMW’s successful 02 Series, it featured a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine fitted with a turbocharger that produced around 170 horsepower—an impressive figure in the early 1970s—allowing it to reach about 130 mph and accelerate as quickly as many sports cars of the era. Its bold appearance matched its performance, with wide fender flares, a deep front air dam, a rear spoiler, and distinctive BMW Motorsport stripes, including an early front “Turbo” script designed to be read in rearview mirrors. However, the car debuted during the 1973 oil crisis, when fuel shortages and rising prices reduced demand for high-performance vehicles, leading to a short production run of roughly 1,600 units. Although it was built for only about a year, the 2002 Turbo became a symbol of innovation and performance, helping establish BMW’s reputation for sporty, driver-focused cars and paving the way for the brand’s future high-performance models.
